Cafe Sci
The challenge
Cafe Sci is a ground-breaking network of student science discussion groups, run by and for the students at around 100 secondary schools across the north of England. We needed to make science in the 21st Century uber cool so that the teenagers would feel compelled to take ownership of their new site.
Our approach
The look of the website was critical. To test whether our design concepts were correct we asked the audience. We carried out qualitative research with a select group of teenagers to gauge their reaction. They disliked the visual references to school in our initial designs, so we responded to their input with our final designs.
The results
The teenagers loved the fnal design and felt it was ‘a bit like mySpace’ which meant they could defnitely see themselves interacting with it. The site also works well as a marketing tool to attract external investment. This, coupled with the ‘right’ social networking functionality, provides a resource which contines to successfully answer the brief.
